Crane Lifting & Rigging Basics – All-West Crane & Rigging Ltd.

Lifting and rigging are most commonly performed with portable or mobile cranes. These can be all-in-one cranes, where the crane is housed on the back of a large truck-like vehicle or is its own portable vehicle.

Lifting cranes raise and move heavy objects using a suspended arm or beam. The load is attached to a hook on the end of a rope, chain, or cable, and it is lifted using a hoist. It can be operated with a hand chain, crank, or electric, hydraulic, or air power. Not every lifting crane is heavy machinery or an expansive derrick crane.

Rigging and Lifting Slings – Grainger Industrial Supply

Rigging slings and lifting slings are made of cable, chain, rope or webbing, and are used with a lift or crane to safely move large loads. Chain slings handle odd-shaped, hard-to-position loads or hot materials. Teacup pipe lifting slings are used with heavy concrete water and sewer pipes. Round slings are color-coded for quick identification of weight ratings.

Chain hooks used for a lift must be fitted with a spring-loaded safety catch, or designed to prevent the load disengaging – ‘C’ hook (diagram to the left). Multi-leg chains are commonly used to lift the load. Never use a double-legged chain as a single leg with the load suspended from the single leg (photograph – right).

The use of equipment to hoist employees is prohibited except where the employer demonstrates that the erection, use, and dismantling of conventional means of reaching the work area, such as a personnel hoist, ladder, stairway, aerial lift, elevating work platform, or scaffold, would be more hazardous, or is not possible because of the project’s structural design or worksite conditions.

MOBILE CRANE load chart Lifting Capacity calculations and sizes

Sep 12, 2020 · Mobile crane load chart: Simply put, the only way to know if the load you are lifting with a mobile crane is within the limitations of the crane is to relate the lift to the manufacturer’s load chart and notes. Persons who are not crane-operators regularly have questions regarding lifting safety.

Aug 22, 2018 · Often a mobile crane would lift out a large component like this, but if some essential processing equipment is blocking the way, the crane would not be able to be centered on the heat exchanger. In this kind of situation, a lifting rig can be engineered to move the heat exchanger laterally far enough for the crane to make a clean pick.

A tower crane: is a balance crane that consists of the same basic parts. Fixed to the ground on a concrete slab, tower cranes offer height and high lifting capacity. The base is then attached to the mast which gives the crane its height. The mast is attached to the slewing unit (gear and motor) that allows the crane to rotate.

5. Use cranes properly. Cranes are engineered for vertical lifting. That doesn’t stop some crews from trying to use them for side loading or other improper activities. Using a crane to drag something across the ground or from under an obstacle puts extreme stress on the boom, the turntable, and all the structural members.
