Lifting and rigging are most commonly performed with portable or mobile cranes. These can be all-in-one cranes, where the crane is housed on the back of a large truck-like vehicle or is its own portable vehicle.
Lifting cranes raise and move heavy objects using a suspended arm or beam. The load is attached to a hook on the end of a rope, chain, or cable, and it is lifted using a hoist. It can be operated with a hand chain, crank, or electric, hydraulic, or air power. Not every lifting crane is heavy machinery or an expansive derrick crane.

Rigging and Lifting Slings – Grainger Industrial Supply
Rigging slings and lifting slings are made of cable, chain, rope or webbing, and are used with a lift or crane to safely move large loads. Chain slings handle odd-shaped, hard-to-position loads or hot materials. Teacup pipe lifting slings are used with heavy concrete water and sewer pipes. Round slings are color-coded for quick identification of weight ratings.
Chain hooks used for a lift must be fitted with a spring-loaded safety catch, or designed to prevent the load disengaging – ‘C’ hook (diagram to the left). Multi-leg chains are commonly used to lift the load. Never use a double-legged chain as a single leg with the load suspended from the single leg (photograph – right).
